Dr. Davis Witt

Dr. Witt’s hometown is Winchendon, Massachusetts. When he was 13, he underwent a series of orthodontic treatments that transformed both his smile and his confidence. In that moment, his interest in the field of orthodontics was ignited!

The road to becoming the highly trained and experienced orthodontist he is today began at Michigan State University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After earning his undergraduate degree, he pursued his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) at the University of Connecticut’s School of Dental Medicine. Then it came time to pursue additional training in orthodontics at the University of Washington Seattle’s highly competitive Orthodontics program. He obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD), and he’s been helping patients achieve their best smiles ever since!

Over the last 25 years, Dr. Witt has become an expert in the field of orthodontics, and he’s honored to share his knowledge with students at UConn. Although his role as a teacher has been rewarding in more ways than one, a highlight was being able to place the doctoral hood on his daughter, Dr. Julia Witt!

Speaking of family, Dr. Witt and his wife, Susan, have been happily married for well over 30 years now, and they have nine amazing children together! When he isn’t helping patients at our office, pursuing advanced training, or spending time with loved ones, he enjoys kayaking, playing tennis, and skiing!

What level of education is required to be an orthodontist?

In order to become an orthodontist, you need to complete several years of schooling as well as countless hours of continuing education. The first step is earning a bachelor’s degree and being accepted to one of only 67 accredited dental schools in the U.S. After three years of in-classroom and hands-on training, they will obtain a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS). Then, they need to complete training in orthodontics specifically. Dr. Witt chose the highly competitive orthodontics program at the University of Washington, Seattle, which is where he was awarded a Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD)!

What do you do if you can't afford an orthodontist?

It’s very common for patients to assume that braces won’t fit into their budget. However, our team at Witt Orthodontics offers two financial solutions to ensure that the cost remains affordable! First, we welcome dental insurance, which often covers a portion of the price when orthodontic treatment is deemed “medically necessary.” Second, we have in-house financing, which is great for patients who don’t have insurance. Of course, we will review both of these financial solutions more in-depth at your appointment once we have a better idea of your unique treatment plan and budget.

How do I get emergency orthodontic care?

Although orthodontic emergencies are relatively rare, they can happen. For example, if you bite into a whole apple, a bracket can become loose. Or, if you don’t store your retainers properly, they may get lost. Regardless of the specifics, you should call us right away. That way, we can learn more about what happened, assess the urgency of the situation, schedule a time for you to come into our office, and give you detailed instructions on what to do until then.

Important note: If your orthodontic emergency is accompanied by potentially life-threatening symptoms, like trouble breathing or uncontrollable bleeding, then call 911 or head to the ER ASAP.

How do I find the best place to get braces?

Since “best” is a subjective term, it really depends on what you’re looking for! Are you looking for an orthodontic office that’s close to your home or your child’s school? Are you looking for a practice that welcomes dental insurance? Once you have a better idea of what you’re looking for in an orthodontist, you’ll have an easier time finetuning your searches on Google or your inquiries to friends, colleagues, and families.
