Dental Insurance & Orthodontics: The Basics

One of the first questions we typically hear from a patient or parent is, “Can I use my dental insurance to pay for this?” Thankfully, the answer is typically “Yes,” but it’s important to understand the details. Every dental insurance plan is different and understanding what to look for in your policy can give you a much better idea of what will and will not be covered when you come to see us. To help you get started, we’ve put together a short and handy guide below.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance forms

Dental insurance is primarily meant to help patients pay for preventive treatments like checkups and cleanings while also partially covering things like crowns, dentures, and extractions. However, many plans also include a lifetime benefit for orthodontic treatment. This means there is a separate pool of money set aside for each individual on a plan that can be put toward treatments like braces or Clear Aligners . But unlike other benefits, once this pool of money is gone, it doesn’t come back. Fortunately, it tends to be large enough that it covers a sizeable portion (50% or more) of someone’s treatment.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Almost all dental insurance plans will help cover metal braces for patients aged 18 years and under. The biggest variation in policies is whether or not they cover adults or offer benefits for clear aligner treatments (like Clear Aligners). Before you commit to orthodontic care, be sure to look over your policy and talk to your provider so you better understand the terms of your plan. You can also call our orthodontic office, and we’ll be happy to discuss your benefits so you can start putting together a financial plan that works for your budget.
